“A voice of one crying out:
Prepare the way of the Lord
in the wilderness;
make a straight highway for our God
in the desert.”
Isaiah 40:3 CSB
Sometimes the way of the Lord starts in the wilderness. Sometimes His highway starts in the desert.
The wilderness and the desert are harsh places. They can be unforgiving and cruel and threatening to our survival.
And life can seem this way as well. We can feel like we have lost our way or that we need to fend for ourselves. Like the remote wilds of the earth, our hearts can range from frozen and starved to scorched and parched.
Advent is a time to prepare for something new. The wilderness and desert do not go away. But we are given a way. A way through. The way of our Lord. A highway for our God.
So, wherever we may be, whatever trials we may be in, let’s look forward to the birth of the One who will bring us through. The One who is Himself the Way.
